Dr. Maria Cheshire
Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist

With 30 years of experience in my work.

I studied Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. I did my residency in psychiatry at the P. Piñero hospital in Buenos Aires. There, I worked with internal and external patients and I finished my last year with an internship at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid.

From there, I worked in external consultation both in public and private health. I began my training in Systemic therapy in those early years.

After I moved to Barcelona, I did a Master in Systemic Family Therapy at the Hospital de Sant Pau (UAB, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).

I worked for several years in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Center, where I had the possibility of applying the systemic vision in the treatment of patients and their families.

I also worked at the Hospital de Sant Pau, as a family therapist.

In recent years I have decided to dedicate myself only to my private practice and therefore develop the possibility of fostering a more personalized relationship with my clients.

In this context I decided to train in EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy) for couples as well as individuals.

This approach brings together the elements that I consider to be the most effective as well as respectful of my clients. It is based on attachment theory, which in turn is naturally integrated into neurobiology. Which talks about how humans need to be connected to survive, and what happens if that connection does not occur correctly. From there comes the EFT, which is a technique - a way of working to regulate the emotional world from the feeling of security of the bond with the Therapist and, in the case of Couples, it works on the possibility of experiencing the couple as a safe place of bonding. The work is of high emotional intensity during sessions since it works so that a different and corrective emotional experience takes place in the consultancy.
